Commercial Potential
With 1 Hip Fracture every minute in the US alone, the world is even now dealing with an osteoporosis fracture pandemic that will likely increase in overall proportions to become economically unmanageable in the foreseeable future.
In 1995, 40 million patients were affected with arthritis according to the Center for Disease Control. Arthritis resulted in 39 million physician visits annually second only to heart disease. The CDC estimates that by 2020, 59.4 million Americans will be affected by arthritis. The annual health care expenses related to arthritis amounted to $65 billion in 1995. This number is likely to increase two- to three fold during the next decade.
The large prevalence of arthritis in the U.S. population along with the development of new and potentially highly efficacious therapies emphasize the need for improved diagnostic tests to help manage patients with arthritis.
